Abstract:

Background: Neonatal jaundice is a common condition in approximately 60% of term newborns during the first week after birth. Therefore, it is necessary to detect methods for the prevention of this problem. This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of massage therapy on transcutaneous bilirubin level in healthy term newborns. Methods: The present study was conducted on102 healthy term newborns. The newborns were randomly assigned to massage group and control group. The massage group received daily massage for five days from the first postnatal day while the control group received only routine neonatal care (without massage). In both groups, transcutaneous bilirubin level and frequency of defecation were the main studied variables. Results: The frequency of defecation in the massage group increased from 1.08 on the first day to 4.08 on the fifth day, whereas it increased from 0.865 on the first day to 2.731 on the fifth day in the control group, indicating a significant difference between the two groups (P

Effect of Probiotics on Serum Bilirubin Level in Term Neonates with Jaundice; A Randomized Clinical Trial

Background In recent years, tendency to use drugs has been increasing in the treatment of neonatal jaundice. Several drugs have been used since then, but the effect of probiotics on serum bilirubin level (SBL) is not so clear. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of probiotics on SBL and the duration of phototherapy in term neonates with hyperbilirubinemia. Materials and Methods: In ...

The Effect of Oral Fenofibrate on Serum Bilirubin Level in Term Neonates with Hyperbilirubinemia: A Randomized Clinical Trail

Background Several agents have been used for the treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, but the effect of oral fenofibrate on serum bilirubin level was not evaluated so much. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of oral fenofibrate on a total serum bilirubin (TSB) in term neonates with hyperbilirubinemia. Materials and Methods: This clinical trial was done on 80 term neonate with ...

Evaluation of the first day transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) level as a predictor of hyperbilirubinemia in healthy term neonates

Background: The readmission rate for neonatal jaundice has been increased in recent years. This has been attributed to shorter length of postpartum hospital stays without comprehensive follow-up. The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic value of pre-discharge transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) levels for prediction of subsequent hyperbilirubinemia in healthy term neonates. Metho...

Effect of Breast Oketani-massage on Neonatal Weight Gain: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial

Background: The most important factor affecting weight gain after birth is the type and mode of neonatal feeding. The most suitable nutrition is exclusive breastfeeding. However, breastfeeding can be accompanied with some difficulties, such as breast engorgement, which results in neonatal feeding complications. Breast Oketani-massage therapy is proposed as a treatment for breast engorgement. Ai...

SUPINE VERSUS TURNING POSITION ON BILIRUBIN LEVEL DURING PHOTOTHERAPY IN HEALTHY TERM JAUNDICED NEONATES

Position changes are believed to increase the efficacy of phototherapy and this practice is routinely used in all neonatal departments in our country. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of routine turning on the total serum bilirubin (TSB) concentration versus only supine position. In a randomized clinical trial fifty healthy term jaundiced neonates who were admitted to the ...

A Comparison between Transcutaneous Bilirubin (TcB) and Total Serum Bilirubin (TSB) Measurements in Term Neonates

Background: Transcutaneous bilirubinometry (TCB) is a simple method for estimating bilirubin levels in neonates. This method is noninvasive, quick, and painless. We aimed to compare serum and cutaneous bilirubin measurements in term neonates.Method: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 200 neonates with icter with birth weights of at least 2500 grams were studied. TCB was measured using a...
